The Aotea Pinot Noir 2012 is a barrel selection from some of the oldest Pinot Noir vines from the Rabbit Island Vineyard where vines date to the late 1980’s. Vine age is apparent in this vineyard which has deep rooted vines and produces wines with depth and beauty.
The grapes were picked in early April at the peak of ripeness and then promptly de-stemmed and transferred to open-top fermenters. A seven day cold-maceration period preceded inoculation for fermentation. Hand plunging was carried out two to three times a day during the eight day primary fermentation, followed by a seven day period of post-fermentation maceration. After pressing, the young wine was drained into French barriques where it underwent malolactic fermentation and ageing.
This wine is blended from a selection of the barrels which the winemakers consider to be the very best of the 2012 Pinot Noir. It was blended and bottled in July 2013.
Tasting Note
This 2012 Aotea Pinot Noir has layers of summer berries on the nose and palate. Smooth supple spicy French oak notes wrap around the palate fruit weight. An appealing earthy savoury character defines the wine along with fragrant dried herbs.
