Bodegas Artadi dates back to 1981 when its current owner, Juan Carlos López de Lacalle, together with his family and thirteen local growers founded Artadi in the heart of Alava. Juan Carlos represents the 4th generation of winemakers, now joined by his son and 5th generation, Carlos. Today, Artadi own 65 hectares of vineyard in their original site of Álava, in Laguardia, planted in soils with wide geological diversity. These distinctive vineyard sites give singularity to their wines, allowing the character of the fruit and the finesse of the tannins to shine. It is this singularity which prompted Bodegas Artadi to leave the Consejo Regulador of the D.O.Ca Rioja in 2015. Their objective is to focus on origin, hence their focus on single vineyard wines, rather than the Rioja designations, which were proving restrictive. Rioja's classification system permits only one geographical indication: Rioja itself whereas, at ARTADI, they believe it is essential to offer the opportunity to discover the diversity of their land, which gives their wines a unique significance, a distinguishing character and authenticity.

A wine with a well-defined and structured backbone that contains angular shapes which denote power. It presents itself with cautious speech in a submissive and silent way when first entering the mouth, and the strength of its blended tannins and its powerful balance are appreciable in the mid-palate.

VINEYARD Placed in Laguardia at 600 meters of altitude, laid on deep clay-limestone soil

VITICULTURE Maximum respect for the environment; lack of pest or herbicides. Organic viticulture

HARVEST Hand picked in crates of 10 kg. Sorting of bunches and berries. Average yield of 4.000 kg /ha

GROWING SEASON 2017: Mild winter followed by a warm rainy spring that provided the vineyard with a water reserve which favoured the vegetative growth. The effect of the frost suffered on 28th April reduced the crop but the effects were mitigated by the power of nature. They had an early harvest which has given them a vintage of very fruit-forwarded wines. Smooth and fresh wines with a great tannic backbone that makes stand out the slenderness which is a characteristic trait of this vintage.
